The need to stay on the cutting edge of emerging technologies and keep these lines of communications operational and secure makes Information Technology (IT) intelligence professionals indispensible to the IC.
This is a career with the opportunity to help build and maintain the foundation for the IC’s mission of gathering, analyzing, and reporting intelligence information related to national security. You will typically provide services such as customer support, designing and monitoring telecommunications networks, maintaining computer hardware and software, data management, strategic planning, ensuring information and systems security, or designing sophisticated Automated Information Systems.
Intelligence IT professionals work with some of the most advanced computer systems in the world. Qualifications vary by specific position and agency, but they may require a bachelor’s degree or related experience in computer science, computer engineering, or network engineering. You may gain entry into this career through Computer Assistant or Technician roles. IT professionals are also employed in several of the other intelligence careers such as Intelligence Analysis, Information Services, and Security. For those interested, travel opportunities may be available.
The skill set you need as an intelligence IT professional would depend on your specific area of focus. Some important skills include application programming; configuration management; component testing; information security; cyber security; life cycle management; systems programming, testing and evaluation; technical assessment and assistance; and engineering databases, hardware, networks, security, or software.
