Analysis Occupations

The success of the Intelligence Community (IC) depends upon the combined abilities of our employees. As a result, IC member agencies look to hire men and women who possess a high skill level in very specific areas of knowledge, including science, language and technology. You can improve your chances by adapting your resume to showcase your particular expertise as it relates to the position you are seeking.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Intelligence analysts work in many different specialty areas, so relevant skills, knowledge, and education vary according to the specialty area in which you will work. Once you have located a position you are going to pursue, read the job posting carefully and ensure your resume includes any technical expertise you have that would relate directly or indirectly to that position.

Certain analyst positions require an expertise of a particular country or geographic region; or a detailed understanding of a particular issue. Make a point to highlight your appropriate technical KSAs if you are applying to this type of position.

Education

Many of the agencies require a bachelor’s or a more advanced degree. Some common fields of study they look for include political science, regional studies, international affairs, geography, economics, engineering, or physical or life sciences.

When listing your education, be sure to include all diplomas or degrees awarded from educational institutions. Do not submit transcripts unless the agency requests them. Some agencies request grade point averages for each educational institution you have attended. Read the application details thoroughly and be certain to include all desired information.

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

While technical KSAs may vary by specific agency and position, there are a number of KSAs that are relevant to all analysis positions. When crafting your resume, find ways to highlight your:

  • Written communication skills, such as the ability to write clearly and concisely
