Information Technology Occupations

The success of the Intelligence Community (IC) depends upon the combined abilities of our employees. As a result, IC member agencies look to hire men and women who possess a high skill level in very specific areas of knowledge, including science, language and technology. You can improve your chances by adapting your resume to showcase your particular expertise as it relates to the position you are seeking.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Intelligence careers in Information Technology (IT) cover a broad spectrum of technical specialties such as network security, telecommunications, software design, hardware development, and customer service. Relevant skills, knowledge, and education vary according to the specialty area in which you would work. Once you have located a position you are going to pursue, read the job posting carefully and make sure your resume includes any technical expertise you have that would relate directly or indirectly to that position. Specifically outline your knowledge of computer programming languages. Other key technical KSAs may include:

  • Application Programming
  • Cable Installation
  • Computer File Maintenance

Education

Many IC agencies require a bachelor's or a more advanced degree (or related experience) in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, mathematics, network engineering, or another related field.

When listing your education, be sure to include all diplomas or degrees awarded from educational institutions. Do not submit transcripts unless the agency requests them. Some agencies request grade point averages for each educational institution you have attended. Read the application details thoroughly and be certain to include all desired information.

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

While technical KSAs may vary by specific agency and position, there are a number of KSAs that are relevant to all IT positions. In particular, find ways to highlight your:
