Language Occupations
The success of the Intelligence Community (IC) depends upon the combined abilities of our employees. As a result, IC member agencies look to hire men and women who possess a high skill level in very specific areas of knowledge, including science, language and technology. You can improve your chances by adapting your resume to showcase your particular expertise as it relates to the position you are seeking.
Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
IC language professionals are involved in research, translation, transcription, reporting, and analysis of materials of national concern. Alternatively, they teach foreign language courses for the benefit of their IC colleagues. Once you have located a position you are going to pursue, read the job posting carefully and ensure your resume includes any technical expertise you have that would relate directly or indirectly to that position. Specifically, outline:
- Foreign Language Proficiency: Be specific when presenting this knowledge. List each language and include your level of proficiency with respect to key tasks such as reading, writing, listening, translation, and transcription. Specific training courses, other instruction, or experience in foreign languages (such as work experience in translation or interpretation services) should also be included. Many of the agencies prefer applicants with native fluency in one or more languages. Proficiency in English is also desired.
- Other Technical Expertise: List other job-related expertise. Examples include teaching experience, area knowledge, and in-depth knowledge of a particular culture. American Sign Language (ASL) expertise is important for some occupations.
Education
Many of the agencies require a bachelor’s or a more advanced degree. Some common fields of study they look for include foreign language, linguistics, international relations, area studies, international studies, regional studies, or a related field.
When listing your education, be sure to include all diplomas or degrees awarded from educational institutions. Do not submit transcripts unless the agency requests them. Some agencies request grade point averages for each educational institution you have attended. Read the application details thoroughly and be certain to include all desired information.
General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
While technical KSAs may vary by specific agency and position, there are a number of KSAs that are relevant to all language positions. When crafting your resume, find ways to highlight your:
- Oral presentation skills
- Written communication skills
- Critical thinking/analytical skills
- Proficiency in the English language
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to quickly learn technical terms and concepts in order to effectively interpret or translate
