Science and Technology Occupations

The success of the Intelligence Community (IC) depends upon the combined abilities of our employees. As a result, IC member agencies look to hire men and women who possess a high skill level in very specific areas of knowledge, including science, language and technology. You can improve your chances by adapting your resume to showcase your particular expertise as it relates to the position you are seeking.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Science and Technology (S&T) intelligence analysts and engineers solve complex intelligence problems in such areas as foreign weapons development, weapons proliferation, information warfare, and emerging technology. They are involved with research and development, analysis, collection, and/or operations. The relevant skills, knowledge, and education you need will vary according to the specialty area in which you will work.

Once you have found a position you would like to pursue, read the job posting carefully and ensure your resume includes any technical expertise you have that would relate directly or indirectly to that position.

Agencies typically look for experience in mathematics, aerospace engineering, or physics when filing intelligence collection positions. Make a point to highlight your appropriate technical KSAs if you are applying to an S&T intelligence position.

Education

Many of the agencies require a bachelor’s or a more advanced degree. Prospects for an S&T career in intelligence often have a bachelor’s degree in one of the following scientific disciplines: biology, biotechnology, chemistry, life science, mathematics, microbiology, pharmacology, physics, toxicology, or one of the many engineering disciplines (e.g., aerospace, civil, computer, electrical, electronic, mechanical, materiel, nuclear).

When listing your education, be sure to include all diplomas or degrees awarded from educational institutions. Do not submit transcripts unless the agency requests them. Some agencies request grade point averages for each educational institution you have attended. Read the application details thoroughly and be certain to include all desired information.

General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

While technical KSAs may vary by specific agency and position, there are a number of KSAs that are relevant to all S&T intelligence positions. When crafting your resume, find ways to highlight your:

  • Critical thinking/analytical skills
  • Written communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Research skills (e.g., to collect and evaluate data, synthesize large amounts of information)
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Reading comprehension skills
  • Ability to think creatively
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to use the Internet as a research tool
