Fortified air defense units along the Russian Arctic coast were staples of the Soviet Union's national defense strategy for the Arctic. The coastal defense units at Tiksi (Yakutia, Sakha Republic) played an important role in securing Arctic air space and fortifying Russia's northern coast.
These “dual-use” features combine Russian military presence for territorial defense and power projection with capabilities to also address civilian security needs such as search-and-rescue.
