Intelligence Community Welcomes DNI Haines

Avril Haines was sworn in as the Director of National Intelligence on January 21, 2021.

In taking her oath of office, administered by Vice President Kamala Harris, Avril Haines became the seventh Director of National Intelligence in our nation's history. Haines, who was confirmed by the Senate on January 20, 2021, also made history, as the first woman to lead the U.S. Intelligence Community.

After taking the oath of office, Haines said, “Serving in this role is the honor of a lifetime. From my time in government, I know that those who serve in the Intelligence Community are the very best this country has to offer…”

Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2010-13, Haines later served as Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor from 2015-2017, during which time she led the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee.


In addition to being the first woman to assume the role of DNI, she was the first woman to hold each of these positions.
